The attempted robbery has been condemned by Upper Bann DUP MLA Sydney Anderson.

He urged anyone with information about the incident to contact the PSNI.

“Those responsible for such activity need to be apprehended and rightly punished for their actions,” he said.

Local Portadown DUP Councillor Jonny Buckley also condemned those involved in the attempted theft.

“They have ultimately caused a further inconvenience to those that use the local train station which has already seen continued disturbances on the line in recent days,” he said. “I know that the Police have several leads of inquiry, which hopefully will lead to those responsible being brought before the courts for their actions.”

Inspector Philip Shepherd said: “I would appeal to anyone who would have been in this area and noticed any suspicious activity to contact Lurgan Police Station on the non emergency number 101.

“Or if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details, they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
