Belfast marathon 2016 is under way

The 35th Belfast Marathon began this morning at 9am.

Thousands of participants took several minutes to cross the start line in front of City Hall.

Cheering spectators helped launch the runners on the 26.2 mile route.

The Deep RiverRock Belfast City Marathon has around 17,000 participants.

The event finishes in Ormeau Park, with the route taking in all parts of the city, from Sydenham to the Falls Road, Whitehouse to the Ravenhill Road.

Motorists can expect some disruption throughout the morning and early afternoon, although every attempt will be made to ensure that this is kept to a minimum. F

Disruption can be expected in the city centre until around Midday. Disruption also can be expected along the Albertbridge Road, Holywood Road and Sydenham Bypass until shortly after 11 am.
