The alert had been sparked by the discovery of a suspicious object, and the PSNI announced at about 12.30pm that the road had been closed.

The New Lodge is a strongly-republican district to the north of Belfast, near to loyalist Tiger’s Bay and the Antrim Road.

It has repeatedly been the scene of attacks and secutiy alerts in recent times: see here, and here, and here.

By 3.40pm, the suspicious object was declared to be a crude but viable pipe bomb-type device.

The device has been taken away for forensic examination and roads in the area have reopened.

The PSNI appealed for anyone with any information about this incident to contact detectives at Musgrave on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
