Car chase involving helicopter ends with two arrests

Two suspects have been arrested after the police chased a stolen car across much of Belfast on Wednesday.

The pursuit began in south Belfast and involved a police helicopter, which could be seen hovering over the area during mid-afternoon.

The Volkswagen Golf was stolen from the Camden Street area, close to Queen’s University Belfast.

It later failed to stop for police in north Belfast.

Officers from the PSNI’s Auto Crime Team pursued it until it was brought to a stop in the Ballymacarrett Road area of east Belfast at approximately 5.15pm.

The two men were arrested with the assistance of Belfast City District Support Team and local policing team officers.

The PSNI said: “One man aged 22 has been arrested on suspicion of 10 offences, including aggravated taking and driving away, burglary and a number of driving offences.

“The other man, aged 33, has been arrested on suspicion of aggravated taking and driving away, burglary and going equipped for theft.

“They currently remain in custody assisting police with their enquiries.”
