Children escape injury in Belfast arson attack

A woman and three young girls escaped unhurt after their home was targeted in an arson attack, police have said.

Detectives said attackers poured flammable liquid through the letterbox of the home on Ormeau Embankment in Belfast and set it alight.

The PSNI said the incident occurred at about 6.20am on Saturday.

Police said damage was caused to the inside and outside of the front door of the home and the woman, aged in her 30s, and the children, were left shaken but physically unharmed by the ordeal.

Fire crews were called to the house with police who appealed for information.

Detective Sergeant Natalie McNally urged any witnesses who were in the area of Ormeau Embankment early on Saturday morning or anyone with information to contact detectives at Musgrave station.

Police later said they were investigating a link between the arson and a car that was set on fire after crashing nearby.

Detectives said reports were received that a Ford Focus crashed into a garden wall of a house on the Ormeau Embankment at about 3.40am on Sunday.

The car was then driven into Park Parade and set on fire which completely destroyed it.
