Co Londonderry illegal Chinese takeaway workers detained

Immigration officers have detained two Chinese nationals at a Co Londonderry takeaway after they were found to be living and working illegally in the UK.

The 43-year-old man and woman aged 39 had overstayed their visas but were discovered at the Uno restaurant, Anderson Avenue, Limavady.

Home Office officials, acting on intelligence, visited the premises on Friday.

Both workers are being detained while steps are taken to have them removed from the country.

The restaurant owner has been warned that a financial penalty of up to £20,000 per illegal worker will be imposed unless the employer can demonstrate that right-to-work document checks were carried out, such as seeing a passport or Home Office document confirming permission to work.
