Cricket match abandoned after player collapses

Gordon Browne, the Carrickfergus wicketkeeper, was rushed to hospital after collapsing in the Arthur J Gallagher Challenge Cup tie at Moylena, near Antrim.

Browne was taken unwell in the early stages of Muckamore’s innings.

After being attended to by doctors watching the game, an ambulance was called and Browne was taken to hospital.

The game did re-start for a short period after a break of around 90 minutes, before it was halted again.

The captains, Neil Gill of Muckamore and Iain Parkhill of Carrickfergus, spoke on the outfield and agreed to abandon the cup tie without having to consult Michael Foster and Gary Blair, the umpires, who were also in agreement.

Carrickfergus had made 168 for eight batting first, and Muckamore were 27 for one when the game was formally called off.

In a statement, Carrickfergus said: “The players and officials of Carrickfergus Cricket Club would like to thank all of those who have sent messages of support to club wicketkeeper Gordon Browne who took ill during today’s match at Muckamore.

“Gordon is currently being well looked after by medical staff at Antrim Area Hospital and everyone wishes him a speedy recovery. In particular we would like to thank the players and officials of Muckamore Cricket Club, together with the match umpires, for their help, support and understanding earlier today.”
