Belfast security alert ends - incident started after ‘parts of a firearm and a number of rounds of ammunition’ found by member of the public in alleyway

A security alert on the Springfield Road, west Belfast has now ended.

A PSNI statement said police and ATO examined a number of suspicious objects, which were found by a member of the public in an alleyway this morning, and have declared them to be parts of a firearm and a number of rounds of ammunition.

All the items have been removed for further forensic examination and all roads in the area have been re-opened.

An investigation is underway and anyone with any information about this incident or who may be able to help with the investigation, is asked to call police at Woodbourne on the non-emergency number 101, or submit a report online using the non-emergency reporting form via http://www.psni.police.uk/makeareport/.

Earlier a number of roads and a local medical centre are closed, as officers conducted enquiries.

And earlier a Tweet from SDLP Councillor Paul Doherty says: “I have been speaking to residents affected by an ongoing security alert in West Belfast causing major disruption including the closure medical centre.”
