The incident was initially publicised by Translink on Monday morning when announcing a delay on the normally busy line.

Translink has now confirmed that the PSNI were called to deal with two passengers as a result of a “passenger safety” issue.

A company spokeswoman said: “In the interests of passenger safety, alcohol is not permitted on our services.

“Two passengers who were consuming alcohol verbally abused staff when asked to stop.

“The PSNI were called and the people disembarked at Helen’s Bay. The train was slightly delayed.”

The spokeswoman added: “We condemn this incident and all anti-social behaviour in the strongest possible terms.

“We would urge people to only make essential journeys in these challenging times, as our staff are working extremely hard to ensure we continue to deliver vital public transport services for key workers.”

The original Twitter message said: “Due to disruptive passengers on the Bangor to Portadown line the 11:25 service from Bangor will be delayed.”
