Co Down gun attack ‘attempted murder’

Those responsible for gun attack on a man in Co Down on Sunday night must be “taken off the streets” without delay, an Alliance MLA has said.

A man in 50s was treated in hospital for gunshot wounds to his shoulders and thigh following the incident on the Ballycreely Road in Comber.

Strangford MLA Kellie Armstrong said people must support the police to catch those responsible for this attempted murder.

“I condemn without reservation whoever was behind this shooting in Comber,” she said.

“The police are treating this attack as attempted murder and it is vital those responsible are taken off the streets as soon as possible.

“I would urge anyone with information about this attack to pass it to the police or anonymously to the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.

“I offer my best wishes to the injured man and hope he makes a full recovery.”

A PSNI spokesman said the victim’s injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

He said: “Shortly after 10.20pm, it was reported that a man in his 50s drove into a yard, when it was reported that a masked man emerged from a hedge armed with a suspected handgun.

“It was reported that the man fired a number of shots at the male, causing injuries to both of his shoulders and to his right thigh. Damage was also reported to his vehicle during the incident. The assailant is described as being 5”8 in height and of medium build.”

The police spokesman added: “Enquiries are continuing to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident. We are appealing to anyone with any information in relation to this incident to contact detectives in Newtownards on 101, quoting reference number 1635 15/03/20. Alternatively, information can also be provided to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 which is 100% anonymous”.
