On Thursday morning, Sinn Fein’s Paul Maskey said a “crude” device was discovered outside the home of Martin Finucane in Lenadoon – a brother of murdered solicitor Pat Finucane.

Shortly after 10am police confirmed they were in attendance at a security alert in the Glenties Drive area.

Police later said they received a report that an object was thrown at the front window of a house, and that a vehicle was heard making off from the scene.

Army experts were then tasked to examine the remains of a suspicious object in the front garden.

A PSNI spokesman said that “the remnants of a crude explosive device that did not ignite,” were found and that two adults inside the property escaped injury.

“A motive for this attack has not yet been established. We are extremely fortunate no one was injured in what was a reckless act in a built up area,” the spokesman said.

He added: “I am appealing for anyone who was in the area of Glenties Drive around the time of the incident and who witnessed any unusual activity or vehicles to contact detectives in Musgrave Police Station on 101 quoting reference 212 20/02/20.

“Alternatively, information can also be provided to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 which is 100% anonymous and gives people the power to speak up and stop crime.”

Mr Maskey said: “This is wrong and I unreservedly condemn it. This attack is reckless and shows a callous disregard for the Finucane family and the local community.

“This is an attack on a justice and human rights campaigner and as such is an attack on the whole community.”

He added: “Those behind this device have nothing to offer society

“I would call on anyone with any information on those responsible for this attack on a home to bring it forward to the police.”
