A bomb alert in Co Tyrone has failed to turn up any explosive device.

This alert, the latest in a string in the far west of the Province, concentrated on the nationalist-dominated Culmore Park area of Omagh.

It comes after a live bomb was found on the shoreline in north Enniskillen earlier in the week.

Before that, there were two apparent hoaxes in the Fermanagh area, where a report was received by police of a bomb each time, but searches revealed nothing.

Also this week, the PSNi were told that someone had opened fire on Enniskillen’s police station – but police officers found no evidence to substantiate this, like bullet marks or shell casings.

A number of residents’ homes were evacuated during the searches today, but in the end the PSNI said they found “nothing untoward”.

UUP Omagh councillor Chris Smyth told the News Letter: “I certainly feel for the families who have been dislocated from their houses because of this security alert.

“The people who have enacted it, those responsible for it, have done nothing to further any of their causes.”
