Police claimed John Goddard removed the confectionery capsule containing cannabis from his backside and put it in his mouth.

The 48-year-old is also accused of kicking a PSNI officer to the face during a struggle on Wednesday night.

Goddard, with an address at The Mount, appeared at Belfast Magistrates’ Court charged with indecent behaviour, breach of an Anti-Social Behaviour Order (ASBO), possession of Class B drugs and assault on police.

Under the terms of an ASBO he is prohibited from drinking alcohol in public.

Goddard was arrested on suspicion of being drunk and causing disturbances at Botanic Avenue in the south of the city.

“The defendant was observed in Subway with his penis exposed,” a PSNI officer said.

Deputy District Judge Liam McStay was told that a quantity of cannabis was discovered on the accused while in custody.

He was then taken for X-rays amid suspicions that items were also being concealed in his rectum.

“When he returned from hospital he was observed by police to remove a Kinder Egg from his backside and place it in his mouth,” the officer claimed.

“It was seized following a struggle (where) the defendant kicked a constable to the mouth.”

He added: “Inside the Kinder Egg capsule more cannabis was found.”

Seeking bail for his client, defence barrister Michael Boyd acknowledged that he faced a difficult task.

“He’s an inveterate alcoholic and street drinker,” counsel said.

Mr Boyd argued, however, that Goddard faces losing his accommodation if kept in custody.

“He is asking the court to give him one final chance to observe the conditions of the ASBO,” he stressed.

“It’s a very sad, depressing situation.”

But refusing bail, Mr McStay held that the circumstances show Goddard cannot abide by conditions imposed on him.

“His offending behaviour is offensive to the public and presents considerable risk to the public,” the judge said.

Goddard was remanded in custody to appear again by video-link in four weeks time.
