Man arrested in Maghaberry over illegal streaming – police stress it is not a ‘victimless crime’

Detectives this evening said they had have arrested a 32-year-old man and seized a number of electronic devices from a property in the Maghaberry area.

They made the arrest earlier on today, and conducted a search of a house in the area under the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act (a law laid down in 1988 governing misuse of trademarks, use of illicit transmissions, et cetera).

The items were removed for further forensic examination.

Officers were assisted by colleagues from the Cyber Crime Department in relation to the investigation.

They said the man was arrested on suspicion of copyright and fraud offences.

He is currently assisting police with their enquiries.

Detective Sergeant Stephen Cargin said: “This proactive policing operation targeted the illegal streaming of media services.

“Although users may think this is a victimless crime, this large scale operation has a direct impact on businesses and consumers.”
