Man broke ankle monitor 'while kicking cat' court is told - and he has yet to pay £125 compensation that was ordered last year

A man who pleaded guilty to causing criminal damage to an electronic monitoring tag initially claimed he had accidentally damaged it after being "attacked" by his cat, and when he kicked the pet, his foot had struck a bannister.

Andrew Fleming, 25, and formerly with an address formerly listed as Old Bleach Villas in Randalstown but now given as Rathfern Way in Newtownabbey, had the tag fitted in connection with a bail curfew.

The damage to the tag happened on August 13 last year, Antrim Magistrates' Court, sitting in Ballymena, was previously told.

A prosecutor told the earlier court the defendant initially said he had been walking down stairs when his "cat had attacked him, resulting in him kicking the cat and subsequently kicking the stair bannister, resulting in the strap coming off".

At a court last year, the defendant was ordered to pay £125 compensation for the damage caused to the tag, and had been put on probation for two years.

He failed to attend a number of probation appointments, and was back in court today for breaching the order – which has now been revoked by the court.

He still had not paid the £125 compensation.

District judge Nigel Broderick adjourned the case to December 9 and warned that, if the defendant "wants to save himself from prison", he needed to bring the compensation to court by then.
