Man caught drink-driving by police at McDonald's drive-through in middle of the night

A man was detected driving whilst unfit in the area of a McDonald's restaurant in Ballymena.

Declan Joseph O'Hara, 40, a plasterer, of Roguery Road near Toomebridge, committed the offence on November 2 this year after police received a report of a suspected drink-driver at 12.20am.

He had been at the drive-though section, and police spoke to him when he drove into a parking bay.

A prosecutor said the defendant's eyes were glazed, his speech was slurred and there was a smell of intoxicating liquor.

"At that point he appeared unsure of his date of birth," a prosecutor told Ballymena Magistrates' Court today.

A defence lawyer said the defendant had been "working late" and had a "couple of drinks" and did not believe he would have been over the limit.

The defendant admitted driving whilst unfit and failing to co-operate with a preliminary breath test.

He was banned from driving for 14 months and was fined £500.
