When spotted, the car “made off from police and was driven on the wrong side of the road at high speed towards the city centre”.

It was abandoned and the two males onboard fled on foot.

This morning the PSNI said they have charged a man, aged 32, with offences allegedly arising from that incident.

These include aggravated vehicle taking, taking a motor vehicle without authority and failing to stop for police.

He is expected to appear before Belfast Magistrates’ Court tomorrow.

He was released on bail pending further enquiries in connection with an arrest on suspicion of burglary, and released unconditionally in connection with an arrest on suspicion of dangerous driving.

However, because he faces the other charges, he remains in costody at time of writing.
