Man on NI bus says he has COVID-19, spits at PSNI officers and is arrested for drugs offences

A passenger on a bus was arrested for drugs offences and attempted grevious bodily harm with intent when he spat at PSNI officers telling them he had COVID-19.

The incident occurred on a bus in the Newry area on Thursday.

Police were responding to reports of two disruptive passengers when the man spat at them.

The man, who has since been bailed, is also alleged to have caused criminal damage.

The PSNI shared some of the details on social media on Friday morning.

"I feel so sorry for you guys," said one woman referring to PSNI officers.

It has not been confirmed the man has COVID-19.

The number of COVID-19 related deaths in Northern Ireland up to May 22, 2020 is 716 according to Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA).
