The BBC and RTE report that the man, who was shot a number of times at close range at a house on Etna Drive in the Ardoyne area shortly before noon on Saturday, was a senior figure in a feuding criminal gang.

Irish broadcaster RTE say the dead man was “well known to gardaí for his involvement in serious and organised crime” and a “suspect for a number of gangland murders including that of Keane Mulready Woods.”

Keane Mulready Woods was murdered and dismembered and parts of his body were dumped in different parts of Dublin on January 12.

Some of the teenager’s body parts were found at two locations in Dublin.

His limbs were found in a bag in Coolock while body parts were found in a burnt-out car in Drumcondra.

Four men are being questioned by police following the fatal shooting in Belfast.

PSNI Detective Superintendent Jason Murphy said on Saturday that it was too early to speculate on the motive and he was following “a number of lines of inquiry”.
