Irish police on the southern side of the border subsequently discovered a the Audi A4 on fire.

“This gun attack on a family car is an attempt to send fear to a family and to a community,” Mr Irwin added.

“This is an attempt at mob rule and I condemn it in the strongest possible terms, and I would urge anyone with any information to contact the police immediately.”

A PSNI spokesman said: “It was reported that a woman in her 50s and four children were inside the property but were not injured. Damage was caused to the car following the incident, as the dark coloured Audi A4 made off from the scene.”
