The latest incidents followed unrest on Tuesday when several vehicles were hijacked.

Last night officers were responding to a security alert on Skeoge Road in the city when they came under attack.

The PSNI’S Derry City and Strabane Twitter account tweeted that officers on Skeoge Road have had petrol bombs thrown at them from Galliagh Park.

They urged residents to remain indoors.

The alert has now ended and has been declared an elaborate hoax. The object has been taken away for examination and Skeoge Road has reopened.

Sinn Féin Councillor Aileen Mellon appealed for calm.

“We have seen yet another night of trouble in Galliagh tonight and more vehicles hijacked and burned.

“It’s an absolute disgrace that people are being terrorised and do not feel safe in their own community.

“I am appealing for calm in the area and I call on those responsible to stop this reckless behaviour and get off the community’s back.

“My thoughts are with those impacted by these attacks and the people of Galliagh who are crying out for this activity to stop.

“Galliagh is a proud community and will not be dragged down by the actions of a minority who are hell-bent on destruction.”

The violence occurred just hours after the funeral of former SDLP leader John Hume in the city.
