It is understood the pair were along with a number of other off-duty colleagues at the party in the Dunmurry area on Saturday night and into the early hours of Sunday morning.

The pair were detained on Sunday morning and later charged.

On Monday, a PSNI spokeswoman said: “Police are investigating an incident at a private residence in Dunmurry on Sunday, June 7.

“Two off-duty police officers were arrested and have since been charged with a number of firearms offences and are both due to appear at Lisburn Magistrates Court on Thursday, July 2.

The PSNI spokeswoman added: “The Office of the Police Ombudsman has been informed.”

It is understood that although the police ombudsman has been informed about the weapon being fired, the incident is being treated as a PSNI investigation only at this stage.

It is also understood that the officers involved had only recently graduated from the PSNI training college.

Details of where the two officers are based has not been released, and the PSNI has not stated if the pair have been suspended from duty.

The BBC has reported that a number of other off-duty officers – who also attended the party – have been spoken to regarding a breach of the Covid-19 lockdown regulations.
