Although Mr McCourt did not elaborate, he said it was clear that his father’s name was “good enough in life but not in death” despite how much he “contributed to the struggle”.

Mr McCourt said his father had seen his “fair share of bloodshed – more than a human should ever witness,” and added: “Today the Fisher and McCourt family have had to cut all ties with the republican movement and Sinn Fein.

“We really wished it didnt have to come to this in fact we never fought this would of ever of been a situation, but we will always be certain that they have made a mistake today in not honouring Òglach Peggy McCourt to the roll of honour here in Derry, the town he fought and made a better place.”
