Security alert that shut road overnight ends: 'Viable pipe bombs' found
A security alert that shut a Newtownabbey road overnight is over, police have said – with several ‘viable pipe bomb-type devices’ removed from the scene.
The alert in the Upper Hightown Road area was sparked by the discovery of a suspicious object at 3.50pm yesterday (13th).

Police shut down the road overnight, this evening revealing the alert was finally over and cordons had been lifted.
Said PSNI Detective Inspector Lenaghan: “[Police] attended the scene along with Ammunition Technical Officers and a number of viable pipe bomb-type devices were discovered.
“The devices have been made safe and they have since been removed from the scene and taken away for further forensic examination. Cordons have been lifted and the road reopened to traffic.
“Our enquiries are ongoing and we appeal to anyone with any information that could assist with the investigation to contact detectives on 101, quoting reference number 1018 13/01/26.”
Reports can also be submitted to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or www.crimestoppers-uk.org, the officer added.
