The public transport operator revealed it has embarked on the initiative following a meeting with councillors, police and other members of the community over recent issues.

A Translink spokesperson said: “We have launched a new safety initiative with local community and youth groups, sports organisations and local representatives around Greenisland to educate on, and encourage, safe behaviour at the train station.

“Through a series of interactive workshops being led by local rail staff, young people are being empowered to help promote rail safety by developing a greater understanding of the dangers of messing about on a railway line.

“These sessions which see relatable comparisons such as using local football pitches to describe distance are helping young people better understand key messages better like how quiet trains are, stopping distances and how trains may not always be heard until they are just metres away. It is hoped these young people will work with us to help to spread these messages more widely across the community.

“We have also looked at increasing safety measures at the station including improved fencing and upgraded CCTV.”

The spokesperson went on to point out Translink operates a reward scheme offering up to £1000 to any member of the public who witnesses anti-social incident against its staff, vehicles or property and is prepared to give evidence in court, resulting in a conviction.

Independent Cllr Bobby Hadden was among those who took part in discussions earlier this week.

He said: “Translink have agreed to improve security at the station and the PSNI will increase patrols in the area.

“I have been dealing with local residents and others on this issue for some time now and trust that these measures will help.

“I was shocked to hear from Translink that kids are lying and running along the tracks. It therefore may only be a matter of time before we are dealing with a fatality.

“This requires a community response also, so parents please talk with your kids and make sure you know where they are.”

The Mayor of Mid and East Antrim Council, Cllr Peter Johnston, welcomed the initiative too.

The DUP cllr said: “Thank you to Translink for taking quick measures at the train station in Greenisland. I am pleased that new CCTV and security measures have been confirmed.

“The PSNI have also agreed to increase their patrols but we need everyone in the community to assist. If you are a parent of a young teenager, please know where they are, anti-social behaviour is a nuisance but the last thing we want to deal with is a fatality on the tracks.”
