Crown '˜confident' of progress in dog case

A prosecution lawyer told Newtownards Magistrates Court yesterday the Public Prosecution Service intend to have the case against William Mocsari, 27, referred to the higher court in five weeks.

But defence solicitor Darren Duncan revealed that despite repeated letters, “we have not received any response to requests for any physical evidence”.

The case against the Kircubbin man centres on both his admissions and what police say could be “traces of dog fur” uncovered in the fireplace of his home.

Mocsari, from Rodden Street, is charged that he caused unnecessary suffering to a dog on December 3.

Previous courts e heard that Mocsari told his social worker and police that having obtained a dog advertised as “free to good home,” he strangled it with its lead, skinned it, cooked it and then fed the carcass to his own Collie dog.

Yesterday the PPS lawyer said the Crown were “confident” that all the evidence could be served in three weeks with a preliminary enquiry the following week.

Deputy District Judge Sean O’Hare said that if the prosecution was not in a position to outline its case in three weeks “that would tend to speak for itself”.

Remanding Mocsari back into custody, Judge O’Hare listed the PE for May 19.
