The musical colossus was snapped by a member of local group, Peacefrog, who had the surprise honour of supporting Bowie on the Ulster leg of his Outside Tour.

Morrissey had been due to support Bowie in Belfast, but two weeks into the tour the former Smiths frontman pulled out.

Peacefrog band member Davy Treatment recalls: ‘‘My band got the emergency call up from Aiken promotions literally the day before the show.

‘‘David Bowie provided the soundtrack to my youth so you can imagine how I felt sharing the stage with the thin white duke.

‘‘We had just released our debut album Subteranea so it was a wonderful opportunity for us. We acquitted ourselves well, as I remember, in front of a near capacity crowd and although we didn’t get to meet the man himself we were treated royally.’’

However the band’s driver/roadie Brian was lucky enough to have a quick exchange of words with the star back stage.

He said: ‘‘Bowie came up to me and asked for a light. He chatted to me for a while about the troubles and seemed very friendly.

‘‘I cant remember what else was said but he was in his bare feet and was smaller than I imagined.’’

David Bowie died on January 10, 2016 following an 18-month battle with cancer. He was 69.
