Dead of Somme and Jutland to be honoured at festival

Tickets are to go on sale this week for the 2016 Festival of Remembrance, honouring dead soldiers.

The event is to be held at the Belfast Waterfront on Saturday, November 12, and this year’s gathering will make particular reference to those who died at the Battle of the Somme and the Battle of Jutland.

Both battles took place 100 years ago this year.

In a statement, Trevor Hassin MBE, a volunteer at The Royal British Legion and whose grandfather fought in the First World War, said: “The Festival of Remembrance is a truly remarkable event and it is important for us to remember the sacrifices of the Great War.

“Those alongside my grandfather fought bravely for their country in the hope that such a war would not be repeated.

“They deserve to be commemorated.”

George Black, The Royal British Legion’s chairman in Northern Ireland, said: “The evening can be very emotional and includes an extremely moving service of remembrance but it is also a celebration of those who I would certainly describe as the best in humanity.

“We owe them a great debt and it is only right that we take this opportunity to pay tribute to each and every one of them.”

Every year the Festival of Remembrance raises thousands of pounds for the Poppy Appeal in Northern Ireland.

Tickets for the Royal British Legion’s Festival of Remembrance 2016 go on sale at 9am on Friday.

They can be bought at the Ulster Hall in Belfast city centre.
