Stormont tribute to teenage RUC reservist, 50 years after her murder at the hands of Republican gunmen

Stormont has heard a tribute to teenage RUC Reserve Constable Linda Baggley, 50 years after her murder at the hands of IRA gunmen.
Linda died on June 2, 1976, from wounds she received several days earlier when Republican gunmen opened fire at point blank range while she was on foot patrol in her native Londonderry.
Aged 19, she was shot less than 100 yards from where her father William, also a reservist, died in a similar attack in 1974.
Marking the sombre anniversary in the Assembly today, DUP MLA Julie Middleton spoke out after attending a recent memorial service for Linda organised by victims’ group SEFF.
“The suffering endured by the Baggley family is almost impossible to comprehend,” said the Foyle politician. “No family should ever have to experience the loss of a husband, father, daughter and sister in such circumstances.
“I was honoured to recently attend a remembrance service, where Linda’s sister Lorraine spoke movingly about the lasting impact of losing both her father and sister.
“As we mark this significant anniversary, we remember both William and Linda Baggley and honour their service and sacrifice. Their lives mattered, and their memory must never be forgotten.
“I am also grateful that my colleague, MP Gregory Campbell, has ensured that Linda's story and the suffering of the Baggley family have been remembered at Westminster. It is important that the innocent victims of terrorism continue to receive the recognition and respect they deserve.
“William and Linda Baggley will always be remembered with gratitude and respect. They are forever loved, forever missed – and, in Linda’s case, forever 19.”
