Destroyed Fermanagh boilers had generated £170k in RHI subsidies

A Fermanagh business that had eight biomass boilers destroyed in a fire two months ago had received more than £170,000 in subsidies through RHI (Renewable Heat Incentive).

Corby Biomass Systems operated the boilers at a large shed in the Magheradunbar area near Enniskillen.

The 20m x 12m building also contained around 14 tonnes of woodchip which was also destroyed in the blaze.

Firefighters from Enniskillen, Lisnaskea and Irvinestown spent more than five hours tackling the fire in the early hours of January 6.

NI Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) said the blaze was being treated as accidental.

The PSNI said it had been aware of the NIFRS operation at the premises at the time but that there was “no requirement for police to attend” the scene.

The company’s main business is described as the “manufacture of other products of wood; manufacture of articles of cork, straw and plaiting materials.”

In the published list of RHI subsidy recipients, Corby Biomass – which was set up in October 2015 during a spike in new RHI applications – is listed as operating eight boilers.

Prior to their destruction, the subsidies in respect of each 99 KWTH boiler totalled between £19,929 and £23,543.
