Northern Ireland football fans thinking of upgrading their TV for Euro 2016 can head to the pub instead to guzzle 448 pints for the same price.

A new study by money-saving website Voucherbox.co.uk looking at the cost of upgrading your TV against watching all 51 Euro 2016 games in the pub, found fans in Belfast could drink over eight pints during each match and not be out of pocket.

The price of an average pint of lager in the Northern Ireland city was found to be £3.12 meaning a whopping 448.4 pints could be consumed for the same price as a large TV.

That means football fans could drink more than eight pints during each of the Euro tournament’s 51 games – if they could still stand up.

International football tournaments have traditionally been seen as a bumper time for electrical retailers as many fans choose to upgrade their technology.

The new study looked at the cost of a pint of lager in 12 UK cities alongside a comparison of Samsung, Sony and LG televisions in three different sizes, to discover how to get the most value for money out of all 51 Euro2016 matches.

Fans in Belfast could down nearly 450 pints for the same price as one new Samsung H6400 television set.

In comparison, the best value pint in the whole of the UK can be found in Leeds for £2.47, meaning boozy fans can neck over 566 pints during the entire tournament, totalling 11.11 pints per game.

This is followed by Glasgow at £2.75 a pint and Birmingham with £2.87.

Unsurprisingly, London is home to the priciest pint in the country, costing a whopping £5.12, closely followed by Manchester and Liverpool at £3.95 and £3.94 respectively.

With the cheapest TV coming in at £364.55, supporters in Belfast may feel ever so slightly sozzled with 116.84 pints at their disposal throughout the entire Euro 2016 for the same amount of money. This breaks down to 2.29 pints per match.

For a middle-range model, such as the Sony KDL55W805CBU which comes in at £599, lads in Belfast could drink 192 pints during the length of the competition – that’s 3.76 pints a game.

Shane Forster, Voucherbox UK country manager stated, “For those unable to go to France to watch Euro2016 in action, the next best thing is a shiny new TV to watch it on.

“Whilst the context of this study is a bit of fun, it’s interesting to see in which cities’ pubs you can get most value for money.

“If you are planning a weekend away to watch the match, or for any other reason, Belfast isn’t too bad an option for a cheap break. If you’re looking for a new TV, it’s also worth shopping around. A 65” Samsung is 22% more expensive than a Sony of the same spec and size.”

TVs were reviewed May 2016 at Tesco, Amazon, Curry and Argos in sizes; 43”, 55” and 65” and cheapest option was chosen. Technical Specifations of the TV’s include energy efficiency class of A+, resolution of 1920 x 1080p, LED TV Screen, FULL or Ultra HD, with some equipped with 3D-functionality.
