Driver ‘in shock’ after 5,000 litre fuel tanker overturned outside Stewartstown

Foam jets were used to make the truck safe and no further leaks reported.

While paramedics attended to the driver, who was out of the cab when emergency services arrived, before taking him to a nearby hospital.

A Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service spokesperson said: “Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service received a call at 11.19am to a report of a one vehicle road traffic collision at the Ballymaguire Road, Stewartstown area of Cookstown on Tuesday, September 22.

“Two fire appliances from Cookstown Fire Station and one Fire Appliance from Magherafelt Fire Station were deployed to the scene of an fuel tanker overturning in the area.

“The driver of the vehicle was out on arrival of firefighters at the scene and was treated by paramedics. The driver was taken to a nearby hospital following the incident. The vehicle was righted and the incident finished at 2.05pm.”

The Fire service also said on its website: “The driver suffered shock. Fire crews deployed a foam jet to ensure safety until the vehicle was righted and no further leakage was evident.”

The PSNI confirmed that officers were also called to the scene.

“Just before 11.20am on Tuesday 22 September, police received a report of a fuel tanker overturning on the Ballymaguire Road, Stewartstown,” a spokesperson said.

“Police attended alongside NIFRS and NIAS. The driver of the tanker was checked over by NIAS staff as a precaution.”
