This year has been no exception.

‘MILKING THROUGH THE YEARS’

‘Milking through the years’ was launched earlier in the year. It details development in milking methods and machines from their invention right up to the present day.

In the 1990’s the invention of bucket cluster and pipelines were developed which allowed the farmer to increase in herd size. Parlours were the next development to come along and the idea of cows walking into the parlour instead of the byre boosted production efficiency.

Then came the rotary parlours thus pushing efficiency even further. Perhaps the most significant development has been the use of robotic milkers, allowing the farmers to manage their herd.

A visit to Owenskerry commercial milking goats shows us how the parlour can be adapted to cope with different species of milk producer.

Whether it is for a nostalgic adult, dreaming youthful days with bucket and stool or an inquisitive youngster studying the latest rotary parlour, narrated by Mary Lou Hunter, this will keep them spellbound over the festive season and beyond.

‘THE VINTAGE MEN’

This year has seen the production of a charity DVD compiled from archive footage, some of which has been previously unseen. ‘The Vintage Men’ tells of eight men, all from the Garvagh area, and their involvement in all things vintage. All were founder members of the Garvagh Clydesdale and Vintage Vehicle Club. It shows, these men at their happiest, working together at their passion and favoured past time.

However with the passing of years many of these original stalwarts and enthusiasts are no longer with us. We join them in a variety of tasks ranging from building a corn stack to ploughing, sowing reaping and threshing all using vintage machinery of bygone days.

This is a truly moving tribute superbly edited and sensitively produced DVD narrated by Dr John Kerr.

All proceeds from the sale of this production will be given to the cancer charity, ‘Friends of the Cancer Centre’ at the Belfast City Hospital. This is a local charity, so all the money raised stays in Northern Ireland. The charity funds a variety of projects to help sufferers and their families at an extremely difficult time. Whether it be funding nurses, research or more practical issues such has providing convenient accommodation close to the hospital for families, the Friends are there!!
