Ms Ritchie said: “I am disappointed that due to the ongoing Europe wide issues around Avian Influenza, Chinese delegations have made the decision to postpone their planned visit to the UK until next year.

“This meeting between the Chinese authorities and the UK government was to discuss poultry exports from the UK.

“It is important that talks take place to discuss the need for the export certification process for poultry to be affirmed, approved and expedited at an early opportunity.”

South Down MP, Margaret Ritchie continued: “Our economy depends on food exports.

“Although it is disappointing that these important discussions have been put off, I would urge the British government to undertake immediate negotiations with the Chinese government to reinstate this visit, particularly in light of the need to open up new markets, following the decision to leave the European Union.”
