Event is considered to mark Frampton victory

Members of Belfast City Council mulled the matter on Friday, and at one stage the city’s Waterfront Hall had been considered as a possible venue for a gathering.

The firm Cyclone, which promotes Mr Frampton, said it believed the nearby Custom House Square had been under consideration as a potential location.

It is awaiting any proposals.

At time of writing, details of any event (or who may be organising it) remain undecided.

Its head of operations Gerry Murphy said: “Obviously we consider [his latest victory] to be one of the biggest achievements in the history of Northern Ireland sport, so we think it’d be great to do something... It’d be good for the city and for Carl to have that kind of moment.”

Mr Frampton beat Scott Quigg last Saturday to claim the World Boxing Association super-bantamweight title – adding to his existing International Boxing Federation title in the same weight category.

Following his earlier world title win in 2014 an event was staged at Belfast City Hall.

The idea of holding a new event was proposed to fellow councillors by the Alliance Party’s Mervyn Jones, who said there was “a general consensus that we do something to recognise this”.

On Tuesday, Mr Frampton paid a visit to Bridge Integrated Primary School, Banbridge, which his daughter Carla attends, and spoke in assembly about growing up in his native north Belfast neighbourhood.
