Events unveiled spanning the 141 days of the 1916 Somme campaign
Details of the Belfast Somme 100 schedule of commemorative gatherings were released on Wednesday.
It lists the programme as beginning in earnest on July 1, and winding down on November 18 – a period of 141 days, echoing the length of combat at the Somme in 1916 (however, there are a handful of events which fall outside this main timeframe).

In particular, it seeks to bring to light “previously overlooked or submerged stories” through concerts, film, exhibitions, debates, and more.
On July 1, the start of the battle, there will be commemorations in the UK, Ireland and continental Europe.
In Northern Ireland, the programme says that a “national vigil” will be held at the Somme Heritage Centre, Newtownards, from 7pm on June 30 until 7am on July 1, when a morning service will be held.
Then on November 18, a remembrance event called “Row on Row” will be staged in Pitt Park, east Belfast.
