Extra time to quiz suspect in murder case as PSNI give thanks for '˜phenomenal support'

A 50-year-old man being questioned by police investigating a murder on the north Antrim coast have been given more time to quiz a suspect.

Anthony McErlain 48, was found dead in an flat in Broombeg View on Thursday evening at the upper end of Ballycastle (the part furthest from the seafront).

One man, 33, has already been charged in relation to the case.

The extension to the questioning period was granted on Monday morning, and is understood to expire at roughly between 5pm and 6pm on Tuesday.

The senior detective leading the investigation, Detective Chief Inspector Gareth Talbot, said: “The arrested male was detained in Ballycastle on Friday night and a judge has now granted us more time to question him about Mr McErlain’s murder...

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the community in Ballycastle for their help and co-operation over recent days as the investigation team has gone about investigating this vicious crime.

“The support we have received has been phenomenal. We are grateful to all of those who have been working with us to piece together a clearer picture of Mr McErlain’s movements and of the circumstances leading up to his death last Thursday.

“I would ask anyone who may be able to help but who has not yet spoken to police, to please do so. The number to call is 101.”
