Funeral for Cambodian drug death victim

The funeral was held on Friday morning for a man who died after taking opium-based drugs while on a trip in south-east Asia.

Martin Stephen Hale, who was originally from Lisburn but later moved to Banbridge, was discovered in a room of a guesthouse in the Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh.

He had died on July 1 and Cambodian police announced the news on July 2 – the day of his 34th birthday.

His mother Teresa Temple told the BBC that he had used drugs before, and “seemed to think he was alright [despite] all he took”.

She said he had suffered a heart attack after taking “morphine tablets”.

His funeral was held in St Patrick’s Catholic church in Lisburn.

His family requested that donations be made to the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust, which had helped bring his body back.
