Have your say on cuts to library hours

A public consultation on cutting the opening hours of libraries across the Province is now under way.

The public are being invited to have their say from now until July 17 on the plans which would affect 14 libraries – the busiest in the whole of the NI libraries estate.

All are currently open either 54 or 50 hours a week.

The new plan would see all of them open 45 hours per week.

The libraries concerned are: Ballymena Central, Bangor Carnegie, Belfast Central, Carrickfergus, Coleraine, Derry Central, Dungannon, Enniskillen, Finaghy, Glengormley, Lisburn City, Lurgan, Newry City, Omagh.

The consultation aims to “identify the most suitable pattern of hours in the 14 libraries concerned”.

Libraries NI said the cuts are “part of an overall package of savings that Libraries NI needs to implement to help meet current budget demands”.

The plan is to make the changes by November this year.

People are invited to complete a questionnaire, which can be obtained from any of the 14 libraries affected.
