Hide AdChief Inspector Norman Haslett said: “ This alert has caused severe disruption to the local community this morning and I would appeal to anyone with any information to contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
SDLP councillor Brian Heading said: “Police have declared this a deliberate hoax but it had caused a huge amount of disruption to traffic, the school - which had to be evacuated - and was also a huge waste of police resources.
“I would put this down to stupidity and devilment for entertainment. The device was not viable.” There had been a spate of similar hoaxes in the area several years ago by secondary school age pupils, he added.
