“We appreciate your sympathy, but we need privacy,” she said.

“It’s just an exceptionally difficult time. On behalf of the family, we appreciate everyone’s thoughts and kind wishes, but we really need privacy as we process these very difficult circumstances.”

Asked about the funeral, the woman said they were not in a position to give any details yet.

Mr Grugan understood to be from Ballymacnab, to the south of Armagh city, and was involved with the area’s Round Towers GAA club.

Kevin Gribben, the club’s chairman, said on Monday he would be “sorely, sadly missed”.

He described him as having been a “well-liked, very popular gentleman”.
