IFA operations manager Craig Stanfield dies suddenly

Tributes have been paid to the Irish Football Association’s football operations manager Craig Stanfield, who died suddenly on Saturday.

Mr Stanfield, who had worked for the IFA for three decades, is believed to have taken ill at his family home.

A spokesman for the IFA said: “Everyone at the IFA is deeply saddened to learn of the sudden passing of our respected colleague and friend, Craig Stanfield. Craig was a vital part of the IFA family for 30 years & made a huge contribution to football in NI. Our thoughts are with his family at this very sad time.”

Former Northern Ireland footballer and current IFA Elite Performance Director Jim Magilton tweeted: “Craig Stanfield 50 passed away today following sudden heart attack. Absolutely shocking news. Thoughts and prayers are with his family. He was a fantastic guy. #devastated”

Mr Stanfield had returned to Northern Ireland on Friday after watching Arsenal’s 1-0 Europa League win over Olympiacos in Greece on behalf of the IFA.
