Increase in cattle numbers at Hilltown

At Saturday's cattle sale the numbers increased and met with a flying trade for all grades.

Prices as follows: Male weanlings fetch £785 for 342kg, £800 for 354kg from a Ballyholland farmer. £835 for 396kgs Hilltown farmer.

Bullocks £1065 for 602kgs from a Rostrevor farm, £1030 for 522kg from a Hilltown farmer, £1020 for £542 kg from a Drumlough farmer. £1000 for 544kgs for Rostrevor farmer.

Weanling heifers sold to £540 for 232kg from a Kilcoo farmer, £650 for 286kg Kilkeel farmer. £700 for 320kg from an Attical farmer. £490 for 216kg Kilcoo farmer.

Heifers sold to £1090 for 560kg from a Mayobridge farmer, other heifers sold to £965 for 490kg, £1060 for 568kg and £915 for 516kg.

Fat cows fetched £1150 for 842kg from a Mayobridge farm also £990 for 660kg from a Kilcoo farm, £900 for 816kg from an Islandmoyle farmer and £750 for 724kg by an Atticall farmer.

Good strong cow and calf at foot makes £1140 from Kilcoo farmer.

An exceptional Simmental bull from a Ballyholland farmer sold at £1140.

Another firm entry on Thursday night, 21 January. Lamb trade topped at £93 for 27kg £3.44 per kilo produced by a Ballymartin farmer. £87 for 26kg from a Loughinisland farm. £86 for 25kg from a Kilkeel farmer. 20kg sold for £67 from Mayobridge farmer. 18kg sold for £66 from a Castlewellan farm. 15.5kg made £57 from a Newcastle farmer.

Powerful trade for ewes with tops making £94 per hd for good fleshed ewes from Annalong farm. Lighter ewes made £85 twice from a Kilkeel farm. £83.50 and £79 for the majority of the remainder. Fat ram trade saw £68 for an aged sheep.
