Inishowen welcomes '˜Star Wars' crew

While yet to be officially confirmed, local sources have told the ‘Journal’ that members of the crew have arrived in the area to prepare access and the set ahead of filming of scenes for Star Wars Episode VIII.

There has been increased activity in the area and works were seen to be underway near Banba’s Crown on Tuesday. Further lorries arrived on Wednesday and it is understood a temporary road is being constructed.

It was confirmed in March that the well-known Donegal location had been chosen as one of the locations in which the eagerly-anticipated will be shot. A number of B&Bs and local hotels have been booked up for months for the production.

While filming dates have not be confirmed, there is speculation this will take place in mid-May after Donegal County Council announced road closures for the area from May 13th until May 15th from 8am to 9pm.

The road closure will be from the loop of Malin Head from Portronan Pier road junction to Malin Head Pier Road Junction and the Northtown Road. Donegal County Council said the closures were to faciliatate “works” in the area.

The news that Star Wars will be filmed in Malin Head has led to much excitement not only in Inishowen but across the North West.

It’s also seen as a huge, long-term tourism boost for the area.

Heidi Woods, Tourism Development Officer with Inishowen Tourism told how she has been contacted by people of all ages from across the world enquiring about filming.

She said: “It’s fantastic news. We very much look forward to welcoming the extra guests on the basis of Star Wars filming in Malin Head.”

Heidi said she has received emails from young children and fans much older, seeking information on Malin Head and the filming, adding how there is “enthusiasm across the board.”

She added how it expected that Malin Head will become a top destination for Star Wars and film fans even after filming has ceased.
