It is official: the UK is to quit the EU

The Leave campaign has officially passed the winning post in the EU referendum.

The victory was formally confirmed just before 6am.

The BBC had forecast a Leave win at 4.40am.

The final figure was 16,911,138 (52%) votes for Leave and 15,776,916 votes for Remain (48%).

The momentous outcome is a major turning point in UK history.

In Northern Ireland, the vote was 56% Remain to 44% Leave.

In Scotland, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has welcomed that country’s “unequivocal” vote to stay in Europe after all 32 local authorities delivered a vote for Remain.

But despite the vote, the country still faces having to exit the European Union (EU), after the Leave campaign edged ahead across the UK.
