Man admits crash death of Co Down boutique owner

Norma Diffley, 75, who ran a fashion boutique in Donaghadee, died from the injuries she sustained on a section of the Belfast to Bangor road known as the ‘Devil’s Elbow’.

Appearing at Downpatrick Crown Court, sitting in Belfast, was Quin Long Guo, who admitted causing Mrs Diffley’s death on January 4 2016 by driving without due care and attention.

The Groomsport great-grandmother’s death marked the first road fatality of 2016, and occurred close to Carney Hill.

When the death by careless driving charge was put to 35-year-old Guo, from Springfield Road in Bangor, he replied “guilty”.

Crown prosecutor Laura Ivers told Judge Brian Sherrard that the plea was “welcomed” and eradicated the need for a trial.

Judge Sherrard banned the Bangor businessman from driving, saying the “interim disqualification” took effect from today.

The judge also revealed that the length of the driving ban will be determined later this month, when Quo is sentenced for the single offence, telling the court the duration will be “at least 12 months”.

Judge Sherrard ordered the compilation of a pre-sentence report, and was also informed that a victim impact statement will be prepared.

Guo was released on continuing bail and was told to return to court on May 26 for sentencing.
