Man detained by Belfast shop staff during attempted robbery

A man has been arrested following an attempted robbery in east Belfast.

Around 7.45am on Saturday (Jan 16) the 28-year-old, who was armed with a knife, entered a shop on the Beersbridge Road and demanded money from the till.

He was over-powered and detained by staff until police arrived a short time later.

On Saturday afternoon he was still being questioned by detectives.

Detective Sergeant Hawthorne is appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident, or anyone with any information that could assist with the investigation, to contact detectives at Reactive and Organised Crime in Musgrave on the non-emergency number 101, or anonymously through the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
