Man in court over Ulster-born Royal Gibraltar Private murder

A man has appeared in court charged with the murder of a soldier.

Matthew Boyd, from the Royal Gibraltar Regiment was found unconscious in Brecon, mid Wales, at around 1am on Sunday.

He later died in hospital.

Jake Vallely, 23, appeared at Brecon Magistrates Court charged with Private Boyd’s murder.

The 23-year-old, whose address cannot be published, only spoke to confirm his name and age before being remanded into custody.

A second man, 22-year-old Aaeron Evans, also stood before JPs accused of assault causing actual bodily harm on

He was also remanded in custody.

Both Vallely and Evans will appear at Cardiff Crown Court on Friday.

In the meantime, Private Boyd’s family has issued a tribute to the well-liked 20-year-old - who lived lived in Gibraltar but was originally from Northern Ireland.

In statement they said: “We would like to thank the community of Brecon for their thoughts and condolences. It has given us such strength as a family at this horrendous time. Matthew was a kind and popular young man, and it has been wonderful to see his warm and kind personality being replicated through the kindness of complete strangers.

“The people of Gibraltar have been fantastic to us, and we are grateful for their support.

“We are particularly grateful for the support from those currently in Brecon from Matthew’s regiment, the Royal Gibraltar Regiment, who have gone out of their way to support us. “
