Man released in probe over pensioner killing

A 30-year-old man who was arrested by detectives investigating the murder of a pensioner has been released on police bail, pending further inquiries.

Police had announced his arrest at about 1pm on Wednesday, and then announced his release shortly after 2pm on Thursday.

He had been detained on in the Newry area.

The officers who arrested him are investigating the killing 73 year old Eugene Carr from Bessbrook.

At the time it was reported that the pensioner was disabled, and that he had been stabbed with a hook, as well as being beaten.

The attack happened while he was in his bed at Clogharevan Park, Bessbrook.

It occurred during the early hours of August 31.

He then died in hospital on November 17 last year.

Senior Investigating Officer Chief Inspector Lee McNevison said that the elderly and vulnerable man had fallen victim to “a horrendous attack”, during a “violent aggravated burglary”.
