'Mechanical fault' cause of car fire after bomb squad tasked to scene

Police have confirmed a mechanical fault is believed to be the cause of a car fire on A2 between Belfast and Bangor this morning.

Shortly before 8.30am police received a report that a car had caught fire at the junction of Ballyrobert Road. The female driver of the vehicle was not injured.

Following initial enquiries at the scene, Army Technical Officers were tasked to conduct an examination of the vehicle.

The main A2 was closed at this time while the investigation into the circumstances of the incident continued.

The Press Association reported that police sources said the woman who was driving the car is not a serving officer.

The road has now re-opened.
